Once the ledger and posts are in place, install the heam(s) that support(s) the joists and decking. Beams run parallel to the ledger and fasten to the posts. The number of beams increases as the span away from the house increases.
Hi Everyone, I am tearing down our existing deck and rebuilding a new one in it's place. It will be 28' long x 16' deep. Obviously, I cannot find 28' joists and am having a hard time figuring out how to build the joists.
thanks for the replies. the pic isn't mine, it's just meant to demonstrate the idea of using blocking on joist hangers as mini joists in order to lay decking parallel to the full-length joists. the spacing of the mini-joists will always be 16" OC, I know 5/4 decking shouldn't span greater than that.
The deck floor support comes from a variety of places first the deck footings (posts), second the deck frame and beams, and third the deck joists. Installing the joists is a highly satisfying part of deck building, because after they’re installed within the deck frame, you can actually begin to visualize your deck in reality. Here are some tips and tricks for installing the deck joists.
How To Change Direction Of Decking Boards From Parallel To Perpendicular To House. by D. Kenn I would like to change the direction of the decking boards on my deck and am in the beginning process of redoing my deck.
Some decks are designed with a joist orientation parallel to the house. This is useful in cases where you do not want to hang framing members from the house wall. In order to rotate the joist’s typical direction, you will need to install beams that project perpendicularly out from the house. The post is located along the rim joist that runs parallel to the main joists. You will notice that to build the deck properly you have to block between two pairs of joists to make the rail post connection stiff enough.
Deck boards installed across (square) to the joists will strengthen the deck to help prevent swaying, whereas incorrectly installed deck boards parallel to the joists do not. Deck boards installed parallel to the joists is deck building code violation.
Install it parallel to the outside joist. To measure for this joist, one person holds the tape measure against the ledger, and the other person swings the tape back and forth to find the shortest distance; cut the joist to that length.
(Replace the cutouts at the end of the job with a 5-1/2-in.-wide board installed parallel to the house.) For vinyl, wood or other lap siding, work a flat bar under the siding and gently pull out the nails (Photo 1).
Deck beams and rim joists are two different framing elements in the deck building code (see Figures 2 & 3 on page 4) although the 4×4 guard post attachment with bolts and Simpson deck tension tie connectors is the same.
In decks that extend more than 16’ out from the house, a similar beam is installed, parallel to the house, at 16’ so that joist ends can overlap on top of the beam, since 16” is the span limit of 2x8 joists.
To implement this pattern or design you must run the deck joists parallel to the house rather than perpendicular. Diagonal deck flooring can be installed over a conventional deck frame, but requires that the joists spacing be measured on the diagonal, hence you will require more joists or you will require thicker deck material.
For wood decking using deck clips the first board is nailed or screwed to the joists as above. To install the clip, you drive a nail at an angle through the hole in the vertical neck of the clip, and on through the decking and into the joist. Another nail ties the clip directly to the joist.
Blocking holds joists straight and adds stiffness to a bouncy deck. Blocking also allows each joist to share the impact of footsteps with neighboring joists and reduces “deflection,” or flexing. Snap a chalk line at the center of the longest span of the deck framing perpendicular to the joists, and install blocks made from the same size material.
Wood I-Joist Manufacturers Assoc When a deck is attached to a house with an I-joist floor system where the joists are parallel to the rim joist, blocking and fasteners must be added as shown before installing the lateral load anchors. A similar detail is available from WIJMA for when the I-joists are oriented perpendicular to the rim joist.
